Cree-Led Biodiversity Conservation and Stewardship Fund

Plan Nature 2030 is the first phase of the Cree-Led EcoFund and focuses on protecting biodiversity across Eeyou Istchee. This fund supports Cree-led environmental projects that conserve ecosystems, protect species, and strengthen cultural ties to the land through sustainable land use and knowledge-sharing.

What is Plan Nature 2030?

Plan Nature 2030 is a multi-year funding agreement between the Cree Nation Government and the Government of Québec. It provides $6 million in funding from 2024 to 2028, with $2.8 million available for projects in 2025–2026.

This fund is designed for:

  • Cree communities and community departments

  • Cree organizations

  • Registered Cree businesses with NEQ or listed in the Cree Nation Business Registry

Projects must be carried out within Eeyou Istchee.

Eligible Project Areas

Plan Nature 2030 supports a wide range of local, land-based, and culturally grounded initiatives. Examples include:

  • Ecosystem Restoration
    Wetland recovery, shoreline planting, wildlife corridors

  • Species Protection
    Caribou and bird habitat restoration, fish habitat monitoring

  • Invasive Species Control
    Community cleanups, Phragmites or zebra mussel removal

  • Sustainable Land Use
    Eco-tourism trails, riparian buffers, pesticide-free zones

  • Indigenous Leadership
    Cree-led land use plans, Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCAs), TEK-based mapping

  • Community Engagement
    Youth land camps, biodiversity education, Cree-language signage

  • Climate Resilience
    Erosion control, flood zone mapping, green infrastructure

  • Emergency Preparedness
    Local climate adaptation planning, response training

  • Monitoring Tools
    Biodiversity tracking, water sensors, community data apps

Timeline

  • Funding Agreement Signed: 2024

  • Project Call Launch: Early Summer 2025

  • Available Funds (2025–26): $2.8 million
